Service Learning Projects
Sustainable Transportation on Campus and In The Community. Over 100 students in 16 teams researched components of a sustainable transportation system for the IU-Bloomington campus and surrounding community. Students interviewed experts at peer institutions, in city and state government, and with relevant NGOs, and also went on field trips to investigate challenges and solutions. Their work was presented to decisionmakers from IU-B, City of Bloomington, and the State of Indiana, among others. Spring 2024
IU Health Sustainability: Greening the System and Promoting Community Resilience. Nearly 100 students in 20 teams researched components of a healthcare system sustainability program, interviewing nearly 50 key informants at exemplar systems across the country and internationally. Topics included, e.g., reducing operating room emissions, environmental health services and chemicals, healthcare system-based community farms, building energy and efficiency, and grant-based funding sources. Spring 2023
IU Center for Rural Engagement’s Sustaining Hoosier Communities – Washington County. Students developed proposals onmultipleprojects identified bytheresidents of WashingtonCounty, researching connections withsmall town well-being and resilience and traditional festival revitalization, youth financial literacy programs, youth leadershipprograms, programsinentrepreneurshipand business development for recent highschool graduates, park revitalization, and bookstore presence in small communities, and proposing new programs and approaches. Spring 2021
IU Renewable Energy Project. In support of the IU Integrated Program on the Environment- Environmental Resilience Institute Joint Task Force and SustainIU, students conducted secondary source research as well as interviews with key informants on potential components of a carbon neutrality plan for the IU-Bloomington campus, as well as economic impact of renewable energy alternatives. Fall 2021
United National Global Compact Social Sustainability Project. Interviews with UN Global Compact participants re: environmental impact, climate change, human rights impact assessments, quarterly reporting, and non-state-based grievance mechanisms. Spring 2020
IU Dining Unlimited Meal Plan Project. Researching the health and nutrition, sustainability, and financial impact of creating an ‘all you care to eat’ meal plan for IU students. Spring 2020
Environmental Resilience Institute Indiana Business Case Study Project. Interviews with eleven businesses based in Indiana or with a substantial Indiana presence on issues of climate resilience and sustainability initiatives. Fall 2020
